< Scoop New iPhone Features

Version 1.1.3 of the iPhone software was released in mid January of 2008. This new version adds a few stand out features to your already almost-too-useful iPhone.

The feature you'll notice first is the customizable home screen. After holding your finger down on one of the home screen icons for a second or so, they icons will start to shake. They can then be dragged around into any order, including to new pages (by dragging them all the way to the right).  Press the iPhone's home button to exit this edit mode.

The built-in Safari internet browser has a new plus (+) button centered at the bottom. This button allows any web page to be added to your iPhone's home screen.

The other drool-worthy feature in the 1.1.3 release is an improved mapping program. The built-in mapping feature that was already the coolest around now has a GPS-like feature to pinpoint your location via triangulation. It's not quite as precise as a real GPS but it has proven surprisingly accurate so far; in my informal tests it always accurately pinpointed my location to within one block in some areas, and down to 10 blocks in others.

Other recent mapping improvements include an overlay of traffic conditions to help you avoid gridlock.

For those of you using 64 bit versions of Windows, you'll be glad to know that the newest version of iTunes now lets you sync with your iPhone!
